Nether Prov gets lighting grant
■ NETHER PROVIDENCE — Township officials received some unexpected good news recently when they learned the county had approved a request for a grant for walkway lighting at Hepford Park.
Commissioner Frank Noyes said the $45,000 in funding will be used to install waist-high fixtures that will help illuminate the macadam path in the park, located in the Garden City section.
Commissioner Larry Baker represents that section and had advocated for Community Development Block Grant money for the improvement.
Initially, the county planning department, which administers the program locally, had denied the request, submitted as part of the township’s 2012 CDBG application. The only sections of Nether Providence that qualify for CDBG funds are Garden City and South Media because of the percentage of low-income households there.
County officials were concerned the expenditure might not be appropriate since residents from throughout the township use the facility, particularly for youth baseball and soccer games.
However, further review determined that since nearby residents predominantly use the park, the grant would meet the criteria.
Now that the project has been greenlighted, the township will need to seek bids for the work.
A decision on the township’s 2013 CDBG request has not yet been rendered.
